Despite losing seven seniors, the Cross Creek Lady Backs are having a great softball season.

Softball Coach Lisa White said the team is doing its best to rebuild a strong set of players as the team heads into the region playoffs Thursday.

“This has been a teaching season,” the coach said. “We’re very young, so it’s a rebuilding year for us this year.”

Seniors Baylee Hall and Ali Hildebrandt have stepped into the leadership role on the team, White said.

Hildebrandt, a right-fielder, said she has been playing softball since the age of 7. Once she graduates, however, she plans to hang up her glove and focus on college.

“It’s kind of sad,” Hildebrandt said. “But I’m focusing on school.”

Valen Avery, a center-fielder and the only freshman on the team, realizes she has some big shoes to fill. But she’s already getting to work and is very excited about being on the team.

“It’s kind of unreal being the only freshman on the team,” Avery said. “I have to show everyone that I’m just as good as the other girls.”

Coach White said Tuesday’s game against Hephzibah High School will determine whether the Lady Backs, with a 14-10 record, enters the playoffs in the number one spot. The game is at Hephzibah at 5 p.m.

“We should be the number one team on our side,” White said.
